Be Unique

As an affiliate, you are often in the position of competing against many other people, sometimes thousands of them. If you do exactly what they are doing, you will disappear into the crowd and probably fail. So, you need to be different.

What exactly does that mean?

Well, start with you. No other affiliate is just like you and if you can show who you are to your prospects, you will start to stick out in their mind. The easiest way to do this is to publish your own email newsletter or blog. Show your personality and become “real” to your readers.

Have an opinion and tell people what it is. If it’s contrary to popular wisdom, so be it – just explain why you think the way you do. If you have been honest with people and have established a relationship with them, they will respect you for it, even if they disagree. And if some people don’t like you or your opinions, well, then , they weren’t likely to buy anything you recommended anyway

One of the mistakes many affiliate marketers make (including me) is to rely only on the pre-made sales materials provided by the merchants. That’s why on some big promotions in the internet marketing world, you’ll sometimes see dozens of the same exact email being sent out. All this does is anger your prospects and show them that you couldn’t even take the time to personalize the message and make it relevant to them.

Use the merchant sales materials as a starting point but add your own unique voice to it. If you are using the Top Strategy tactic of preselling, your prospects already know you and want to hear what you have to say, not some precanned sales pitch. In fact, that’s one of the biggest dangers of not being unique – not only is it less effective, you run the risk of damaging the relationship you worked so hard at developing with your prospects.

There are other ways of being unique and different as well.

Try giving information that your prospect can’t find anywhere else (or at least not easily). I subscribe to several newsletters where I don’t particularly care for the person running it, but I stay subscribed because they let me know about new products or resources that I otherwise wouldn’t hear about.

Being different also gives you an edge when your prospect has a choice as to whose link to purchase from. If your information and preselling efforts stand out from the crowd, he is more likely to remember you and go through your affiliate link.

One final way of being different is through the use of incentives, which is covered on my incentives page.
